CBT (Compulsary Basic Training)

Hello To All You New Riders And Welcome To The World Of Motorcycles,Enjoy!

What Can I Ride?

If your 16+years old you must complete Compulsory Basic Training before you ride any 50cc bike or scooter on the road. As from your 16th birthday you become entitled to ride a restricted 50cc moped (geared or automatic) upon completion of a CBT course. Once you become 17 your licence automatically allows you to ride upto a 125cc (geared or automatic) with no further training necessary or you can now take your A1/A2 motorcycle licence.

A CBT certificate lasts for a 2 year period, If you wish to continue riding without taking your licence further you will need to re-attend a CBT course and have a new certificate issued.

If you have a full car licence issued before 1st February 2001 you are exempt from this rule and may ride a restricted 50cc moped on the road without L-plates and carry a passenger, Although this is Legal it is always advisable to take this introductory training for your own safety.

If you have a full car licence issued before 1st February 2001 but you want to ride a motorcycle or scooter above 50cc you will need to carry out a CBT course, display L-plates at all times and will not be able to carry a passenger.

Preparing For Your Training.

For starters, wear something suitable for riding ideally equipment designed specifically for motorcycling – don’t turn up in shorts and a t-shirt, even if it’s a hot day.

Footwear is regularly overseen by new riders but is vital safety wear, avoid wearing trainers or soft shoes as these are often loose fitting and offer no ankle protection or support.

A decent jacket made with abrasion resistant materials and with armour in all contact points, boots, gloves and jeans are the minimum. Another thing - make sure your helmet is in good condition. It should be free from any visible damage and have a secure fastener.

If possible it is advised to get your head into the Highway code and may help you grasp a better concept of riding prior to your training.

It is mandatory for us to see your Uk Driving Licence before carrying out any form of training so please bring both parts (counterpart and photo card) of your licence with you every time!

And remember it is a long day –  so try getting a good night’s sleep.

What the CBT involves

The course is divided into 5 main sections, which you’ll be assessed on during your training.

There is no maximum time limit to each of these sections, but each one must be completed before you can move on. So just relax and take each section one at a time. It’s really not that bad!

This is what you could expect in each section of the CBT:

Introduction

This is your introduction to motorcycling and will cover a wide range of subjects ie: Equipment, Highway code and maintenance to mention a few. Sadly this part is classroom based, boring but very necessary! The instructor will also take you through what you could expect during the course, as well as cover all the legal aspects of riding on the road.

Practical on site training

This is where you’ll actually get into contact with the bike. You’ll be shown the controls and you’ll be taken through some of the basic checks that you need to do each time before riding, as well as shown how to start the bike.

Practical on site riding

This is where the real fun begins! You’ll move onto an off road area (car park) to start riding. This is a controlled environment with no other traffic or distractions.

Starting off with learning how to use a clutch (if on a geared machine) to take off, followed by some exciting things like emergency stops and turns.

Once we are happy with your bike control we will lay out some mock junctions for you to contend with. Your instructor will be looking for your life saver checks and indications in the correct places.

Verbal on road training

You’ll get a pre–road ride briefing, covering the Highway Code, how to stay visible, speed control, road signs and how to ride defensively.

Practical on road riding

This is what you have been waiting for. You’ll be taken out on the road for a ride. Your instructor will start you off on quieter roads and then move you onto faster, busier roads.

You have to spend at least 2hours on the road with your instructor, with a de – brief at the end of the ride.

Once our instructor feels confident that you are safe and competent to ride on your own, you will be issued with the DL196 (CBT) Certificate. Here are a few useful things you need to know about the CBT Certificate:

A full car licence gives you provisional motorcycle entitlement although you must check that this is visible on your licence.  You need to ensure that it shows Category A provisional motorcycle entitlement on your licence.
