The Phoenix Bike Club was established in 2004. It is now becoming the largest bike club in North Devon. It has 70 registered members on its website. There are no joining fees or subscriptions involved in being a member of this club. The only thing you need is to have an interest in bikes or own a bike. It doesn’t matter if your bike is a 50cc moped or a Triumph Rocket, a sports bike, a cruiser, a tourer, a street fighter or a trike. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to biking or have had bikes for years. You will be made welcome.

The club meets at the Kings Arms on the quay in Bideford every Thursday evening from around 7.30pm onwards. Some meet earlier, around 6.30pm, for a ride out first.

All details of the club can be found on our website www.phoenixbikeclub.co.uk

Some club members are taking part in a charity ride from Lands End to John O’Groats and back to Lands End, starting on Sunday the 30th June 2007, finishing on Sunday the 8th July 2007. The charities to benefit are The North Devon Hospice, Riders for Health and Cancer Research (specifically testicular cancer). The riders involved have been sponsored by local businesses, which have been more than generous. You can win prizes for guessing the total mileages of all the bikes involved. It is also being supported by Irelands motorcycles and Lantern FM. More details on how to enter and make a donation can be found in Irelands showroom, on the Lantern FM website or our own website www.end2endandback07.co.uk

If you want more details about the club or it’s charity event, contact Bruce Clarke on 07971072110.

As riding conditions are constantly changing and becoming more hazardous everyday, an experienced rider should regulary review, adapt and update their road skills. At RoSPA we will train you to become more aware of the hazards that arise in everyday riding and give you the opportunity to extend your skills and knowledge that will not only make you safer on the road but will also give you more confidence to tackle everyday situations on our busy roads.

The Training

Training will begin with a number of weekly lecture evenings which will involve discussing Motorcycle Roadcraft and The Highway Code. Then it's on to the road for some practical training which will provide the perfect opportunity to increase your riding standards and match them to some of the best. Each rider will have an initial assessment ride, attend a one day slow riding course, then will be allocated an experienced observer for each ride until they have reached a high enough standard, then will be assessed and invited to take the RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle Test.

The Benefits

  • Improved Road Skills
  • More enjoyment from your riding
  • Lower insurance premiums ( Gold standard RoSPA test grade)
  • Reduced levels of stress
  • Improved fuel consumption
  • Less wear and tear on your bike

DAM is short for Devon Advanced Motorcyclists.

We have been around for over 20 years are part of the IAM and are affiliated to the BMF.

We are a motorcycling club for anyone who rides a bike capable of sustaining 70mph (sorry if this rules out your machine) with the main aim of promoting safer riding. We are all enthusiasts who love riding, usually all year round, and are neither slow, or "anoraks"! We want to help you enjoy your bike in a spirit of making progress, but safely.

Our principal aim is to help people achieve the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ advanced riding test, in which respect we are also a registered charity.

Some of the benefits of passing your Advanced Motorcycling Test, apart from the smart badge, sense of achievement and knowledge gained, are full IAM membership, giving cheaper insurance, and even discounts from various local bike shops, tyre services, and some recovery companies. DAM members often also enjoy local discounts.

The club has a very active social calendar with club nights, ride outs, seminars and special events including BBQ’s, Ten Pin Bowling, Quizzes, Go-Karting and the annual Posh Frock Dinner and Dance.

There are two types of DAM membership – "Full" for those that have passed their Advanced Riding Test and "Associate" for those that are working towards taking it.

An Associate is paired off with an Observer (a volunteer who has qualified through various tests) and the two agree suitable times to go out on observed rides. The Observer offers advice and guidance on all aspects of the ride, giving a demonstration ride and completing a Progress Card. When the Observer feels the Associate is ready to take their test a check ride is organized with a Senior Observer (a second opinion) before the Associate applies to the IAM for their test. A test date is then agreed with the local Examining Officer. To assist with this learning experience we recommend Associates read the book ‘Pass your Advanced Motorcycle Test’ and attend the monthly seminars held at Westpoint. The time period for taking the test depends on your availability and progress – the average number of observed rides is six – these can take anything from one to three hours each.

The DAM group welcomes all new members no matter what they ride, providing their machine can sustain the national speed limits, and there is of course the usual barrage of good humour that is expected with multi make clubs. Although the membership is predominantly male there are plenty of female members and pillions are also welcome.

Club Rides follow the Drop Off System (see Group Ride FAQ's for more) (sometimes called the Rolling Road). Where the run has a designated leader and tail ender and a marker is left at the junction to show the way. Prior to any run the leader gives a quick brief on where the run is going (often with route sheets available) and explains the Ride Rules – everyone is advised to arrive at the start with an empty bladder and a full tank of fuel!

The club has a quarterly newsletter and of course, this website (www.advancedmotorcyclists.org.uk) as well as various regalia items.

First time Membership under the IAM Skills for Life package costs £85, which includes the test fee, book, and (once you have passed the IAM test) local group membership for a year and national IAM membership for a year. £20 is also requested to assist with petrol costs prior to commencing the observed rides programme.

After passing the test, after the first year, there is a small annual membership fee payable to DAM in addition to the IAM's own subscription.

To join us or to get further information check out the DAM website: http://advancedmotorcyclists.org.uk/ or the IAM website www.iam.org.uk
